What do they call a woman who dates a significantly younger man? A couger. While this is a powerful and graceful cat, I don’t know many women that actually enjoy this label. Myself included. What do they call a man who dates a significantly younger woman? Lucky! The double standard has me a bit perplexed. I understand when I was 30 that I wouldn’t want to date a 20 year old. At these ages, people tend to be in different stages of life. A 20 year old is working or going to college, and sometimes still at home, while a 30 year old is usually finished with their education, becoming established in their career, and usually living on their own. Now that I am 41, and usually it is younger guys who are interested in me, my question is….How young is too young?
Recently I have gone on a couple of dates with a man in his mid twenties. When he first contacted me, I was hesitant in even responding. After reading his email, he seemed intriguing so I decided to meet up with him casually. Instead of my usual meeting places that involve drinking coffee, I told him to meet me at Target. (I had some items to pick up!). My expectations were not high, but he surprised me. His smile was bright and sincere when he met me in the greeting card section. I told him to pick out what he thought was a funny card. This was a great way to break the ice. Overall the date was great! We talked for hours. Today I went to the movies with him. So here is my pros and cons list to dating a guy so much younger than me:
Pros: He is energetic and always up to hang out and go do something. He is super cute and has an athletic build. Even though he is young, he is smart (intends on going to law school). He seems to say whatever is on his mind, like he hasn’t learned to edit himself. He has a lot of dreams and goals that he is chasing. He is fascinated by my life experiences, probably because I have a lot of them simply because I have lived longer. He is hilarious- He cracked a joke about how he could kill me and probably wouldn’t be convicted because they couldn’t prove beyond a shadow of a doubt if the crime had been committed by him or by his identical twin brother. (I know that sounds creepy, but you had to be there to see how it fit into the context of the conversation) He doesn’t have big huge suitcases of emotional luggage, but just a small carryon. He is casual, fun, and does not require all my time and attention- this is extremely desirable as I have been busy with the publishing of my book!
Cons: The thought of meeting his mom gives me cold sweats. She’d likely look at me as a “cougar” stalking her young impressionable son. His twin brother’s girlfriend is 24. I also have no desire to compete with girls in their 20’s because they always win. He is not going to be ready for a serious relationship, while that is the only way I really know how to date. I secretly wonder if we look mismatched due to the age difference- I know I look younger, but I’m not delusional. When we were watching the movie previews, he had no idea that FOOTLOOSE was a remake!
